Day of the Dead Festival

La Catarina - popular figure of the Day of the Dead in MexicoFestivities take place in cities and villages throughout Mexico, though each location may have different customs and ways of honoring their dead on the Dia de los Muertos. On Janitzio, a small island in Patzcuaro Lake there are processions, music and folk dances, you can see fishermen in their rowboats with torches lighting up the lake while families gather in the cemetery to spend the night chanting and singing. In Oaxaca, you can visit colorful marketplaces in nearby villages and take part in night-time carnival-like processions called comparsas. In Mixquic you can witness a procession through town with a cardboard coffin leading the way to the cemetery. There is the Festival de las Calaveras (Festival of Skulls) from October 28 to November 2 in Aguascalientes with exhibitions of handicrafts, stands with traditional food and seasonal fruit followed by the grand parade of calaveras along Aguascalientes' Avenida Madero. All in all, there are many locations throughout Mexico where you can experience various ways of celebrating the Dia de los Muertos.
