Palace  of winds- Hawa Mahal

It is located in the pink city Jaipur, in the Indian state of Rajasthan.  Built in 1799, Hawa Mahal is one of the most frequently visited structures in Jaipur.

And why is that? Let`s get some basics.

It is located in Jaipurs old town and like all the buildings in this area it's painted in pink. It was done with the intention to give the women of the royal household an advantage to see the outer world through the stone screens. Hawa Mahal, shaped like a pyramid, was constructed with red and pink sandstone, fringed with white quick lime and has more than 953 small windows carved beautifully known as 'jharokhas`.

The poet king Sawai Pratap Singh built this palace of winds. This is easily the most well-known landmarks of Jaipur and is also its icon. Located in the City Palace complex, it is best viewed from the road outside. As it is beautiful from the outside, you need to reach to the top floors as well. But there is no stairs, you will have to reach the top through ramps. There is also a small archaeological museum there.

How to get there?

It is connected by railways, roads and airways. The nearest airport, which can be access from Hawa Mahal is the Sanganer Airport in Jaipur for domestic flights. For international flights, you can avail the Indira Gandhi International Airport in Delhi. You can took regular buses to Jaipur.

Opening hours

Hawa Mahal remains open from 09.00 to 17.00 hours for the public.
